Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the fees for EU citizens enrolling on the English language programme at UMF Cluj. I have tried e-mailing the faculty and have received no response- also the website translation function does not work and I don't understand Romanian (yet!)

I also heard that EU citizens who are not Romanian can apply for financial assistance from the Romanian ministry of education- does anyone know if this is true?

Another question- the British high school education system is different to the American and continental European one. I have a general science certificate, which you get when you leave school at 16. But we then choose 3 specialist subjects to study between 16 & 18 (we call it 'A-level').
I have biology and chemistry but not physics at A-level. Do you think this would be a problem? (In UK physics is not needed for medical school). Also, would there be any entrance exam?

One more thing- is it unheard of for mature students to study medicine in Romania? It is fairly common here- I am 29 years old, but because I already have a university degree (in Sociology) I am ineligible for financial assistance from the UK government to do any more studying- hence my interest in Romania.

Sorry for asking so many questions! But I'd be really grateful if anyone can help me find out this information.

Many thanks for reading,

Victoria.

That makes you a postgraduated student. From what I've read postgraduated and undergraduated students can have the benefit of a scholarship. You can check these links for basic information (you didn't say in what course you were interested.) http://www.uni.edu/studyabroad/programs/Romania.htm and http://www.ceebd.co.uk/ceeed/un/rom/ro020.htm

I think you'll find this one more recoursefull for you http://capetown.aift.ro/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=42&Itemid=51

These were the links the members posted and they're really handy. I hope it helps you.

Sorry- I forgot to specify I'm interested in the general medicine degree, English medium. -Although I'd be prepared to do the Romanian course plus a preparatory year to learn the language if that would work out cheaper.

I had a quick look at the links you posted- I've seen a couple of them before but unfortunately they don't provide any information regarding the fees and conditions for European Union citizens. Technically, we should pay the same fees as Romanians but I don't know if they make exceptions for the courses taught in English. All of the information I've found on the subject is written in Romanian... need to find a translator!

Any EU students currently at Cluj who can enlighten me?

Hello!

About the fees for Medical studies, have a look there: http://forum.clujumf.com/viewtopic.php?p=1468#1468
For the university year 2008-2009, they were:
1. 10 000 lei for EU Citizens (that's about 2400EUR or £2100 or $3000 if I take the latest exchange rates).
2. or $3324 for the first 3 years for non-EU citizens

Please note that by taking the latest exchange rates (from March 6 2009), EU citizens are supposedly paying less than non-EU citizens.
But, in August/September 2008 before the financial crisis, the Romanian Lei was much stronger on the forex market and the 10 000 lei were then equivalent to about EUR2800 / £2300 / $4000.

Also, there is a possibility that the fees will be doubled to EUR5000 next year ( http://forum.clujumf.com/viewtopic.php?t=502 ). This is NOT confirmed yet, but everything hints to an increase in the fees: diploma automatically recognised in the EU; more and more students from Western Europe willing to come to Romania...

Wait what ? I read the post before coming to this one and I thought it was some exageration. I mean in Romania I expected 2000EUR/year tops but 5000EUR you have to be kidding me, not everyone can afford that.

I guess I have to start considering going to a private university... since it's cheaper heh.

That's just the stupidiest thing I've ever heard.

Unfortunately, the university fee will be doubled for the 2009-2010 enrollment.
And UMF Cluj also added a non-refundable application fee of 250EUR !
