On the "unofficial website" there is information of the year 1 curriculum for medical studies but it is all inpRomanian. Does anyone have the same info in English. I'd like to know all the courses provided in the first year medical english studies... and also for the other 5 as well. Translation would be highly appreciated. Thank you!!

9. Romanian language
10. Physical education
11. Behavioral science
12. Medical practice
13. 1 optional course

Oblig. = compulsory

Credite = credits

Ore affectate = amount of allocated hours

Curs = lectures
L.P. = practical classes

Forma de verificare = method of validation

E1 = exam in first semester
E2 = exam in second semester
V = validation by doing a specific work

Saptamana = week

Hi Bernard,

I had a quick question. I notice in the list there is Medical practice included. Do we do that throughout the year, or after we are finished with our first year? And if it is after the first year (next summer), do we have to do it in Romania or can we come and do it in our countries of choice? When does the school year begin this year (what day of October) and how long does the first semester last for, when do we get our holidays and how long do they last. when does second semester begin, when does it end... basically when will first year end?

...and my quick question turned into a whole load of questions... hehe... sorry... also I had a post in the Introduce Yourselves section with some questions if you'd be kind enough to answer those too.... thank you!!

According to the pdf available in this post which is (unfortunately for newcomers) only in Romanian, the organization for the Year 1, 2 and 3 of Medicine is as follows:

Semester 1:
5 Oct: start of university year
5 Oct to 23 dec 2009: 12 weeks of university classes
24 dec 2009 to 03 january 2010: 2 weeks for Christmas holidays
04 jan to 15 jan 2010: 2 weeks of university classes
18 jan to 14 feb 2010: exam period (4 weeks)
15 feb to 21 feb 2010: 1 week of winter holidays

Semester 2:
22 feb to 4 jun 2010: 14 weeks of university classes with 1 week for Easter holidays (from 3 to 10 apr)
7 jun to 4 july 2010: exam period (4 weeks)
5 jul to 30 jul 2010: summer/medical practice (4 weeks)

Also,
1-7 sep 2010: Toamna 1
13-19 sep 2010: Toamna 2
"Toamna" = the term used for the period of re-exams for those who failed their exam(s) or were absent during the exam periods.

And to get an idea when the next (2010-2011) university year will start: think about the last week of September or first week of October.

Forgot the medical practice question:
As you see in the organization of the uni year, 1 month for medical practice is planned AFTER the university year. However, this will mainly apply to the Romanian students and some rare foreign students who are or will be staying in Cluj.

For those who are planning to return home for the summer vacation, the university allow them to do this month of medical practice in any accredited institution (hospital, clinic) in their home country and validate it when they return to Cluj.

regarding the medical practice, what do they mean by accredited? would a doctor's office qualify (not academically accredited, but the doctor is licensed to practice medicine)? I presume there are certain requirements the student has to fulfill in the work they do.

how many hours are required over the 4 weeks?

Usually one should preferably do the medical practice at a Medical Institute (like a hospital). It does not need to be affiliated to a teaching center or a university; that means any hospital will be OK.
There are some exceptions like usually the Year 5 students (and as from 2009, also Year 1 students) have to do their medical practice with a family doctor (i.e. a GP).

Yes! Each year, one will have specific requirements that will be fully documented when the medical practice paper/form is given to the students. Usually, it's a list of procedures to perform or some topics to work on during the practice. The requirements are adapted to the level of study attained and what the student has learned during the university year.

The number of hours is stated as 8 hours per day for 4 weeks.
